Family law is one area of law that I have really enjoyed studying while pursuing my law degree. While it is always a good idea to consult a lawyer when you have questions about your family’s situation, there are a few things I have learned about this area of law, and I want to share them with you.

Common Questions About Family Law Answered

What exactly is family law?

To put it simply, family law encompasses many different legal topics that involve children and marriage. These subjects can include child support payments, alimony, visitation rights, child custody, and of course, divorce. In regards to children, family law specifically deals with adoption, state child protection, and guardianship.

How do divorces and annulments differ?

Divorces and annulments are both court procedures designed to dissolve a marriage. However, an annulment treats the marriage like it never happened in the first place, unlike divorce.

What is child support?

Child support refers to the amount of money one parent has to pay, as required by law, to the parent who has primary custody of a child. Intended for the benefit of the child, this support is meant to pay for educational expenses, health and medical care, food, shelter, and clothing.

What is the purpose of alimony?

After divorce, a person may be required to make regular payments, or alimony, to their former spouse. The purpose of these payments is to recognize the contributions the recipient to the marriage and to help that person eventually achieve financial independence.
